What to check before check-in at a hotel or guest house

Arrival goes smoothly if you check the booking and message the host a day before the trip. Here is a short list — it works the same for hotels, resorts, guest houses and apartments.

1. Check the booking details

Confirm the dates, arrival time, number of guests and the name on the booking — if you booked for someone else, that person's ID will be asked for at check-in.

2. Message the host

Ask how to get in, where to collect the keys and whether a passport is needed. If you arrive late at night or early in the morning, say so in advance — especially at guest houses, which rarely have a 24-hour desk.

3. Clarify what is included

• whether breakfast or meals are included;
• whether there is Wi-Fi and how stable it is;
• how the heating or air conditioning works;
• whether luggage can be left before check-in or after check-out;
• whether parking is available.

4. Read the house rules

The listing states check-in and check-out times, smoking and pet rules, whether parties are allowed and the cancellation terms. These are exactly the points that cause disputes on arrival.

5. Bring your documents

A passport or ID is required for every adult guest. At sanatoriums and resorts on Issyk-Kul it is checked at arrival just like in a hotel.

6. Check the payment

The deposit should be paid and the booking should be «Active». You pay the balance on site; the exact amount is shown in the listing. See How payment works.
