A baza otdykha, the local holiday resort, is a small site of cabins or cottages on its own grounds, with a barbecue area, a banya, a shared kitchen and sometimes its own access to the water. Locals and visitors from the neighbouring countries book them alike. Meiman lists 100 of them: at Issyk-Kul, in the mountains around Bishkek, in the gorges near Karakol and at the hot springs.
It is a fenced site with several separate cabins for 20 to 100 guests. Unlike a sanatorium, a resort is smaller and simpler: no entertainment programme, no full board, no hotel-style front desk. What you get instead is the privacy of your own cabin, a kitchen, a barbecue, a banya and a shared area for the group.
Issyk-Kul is the most common choice: sites by the water on both shores, cabins with a lake view, direct beach access; in summer they are taken by families and large groups. The mountains around Bishkek — Chunkurchak, Kashka-Suu, Alamedin, Ala-Archa — work for weekends, company trips and the New Year holidays, with skiing and a banya in the snow in winter. Hot springs — Issyk-Ata near Bishkek and the area around Jalal-Abad (Manas), with mineral baths. Karakol and the Jeti-Oguz and Altyn-Arashan gorges suit trekkers.
Large groups — several cabins side by side, a shared barbecue and banya, nobody to disturb. Families with children — a separate house with a yard, quieter than a sanatorium. Company trips — a banquet hall or a gazebo for 30 to 50 people and sports grounds. And anyone who wants the outdoors with hot water, heating and a kitchen.
Sites at Issyk-Kul mainly work from June to September and some close out of season. Mountain sites are open all year, peaking in summer, on winter weekends and over the New Year. Hot-spring sites work year-round. Some resorts confirm a booking right away, others are confirmed by the host after checking the dates. Once it is confirmed, you pay a deposit via QR or by card: Meiman holds it until you check in and only then passes it to the host; the rest is paid on arrival. In peak season and at New Year the best sites go one to two months ahead.
