Staying in Bokonbaevo on Issyk-Kul

Bokonbaevo is the district centre of the southern shore and one of the few places on the lake people come to for something other than swimming. Eagle hunters keep their birds here and show hunting with them, the mountain road to Song-Kul starts nearby, and the village itself is quiet and noticeably cheaper than the resort north.

What people book

More than half the listings are guest houses: rooms at the host's place, breakfast, help with transport and excursions. There are also whole houses and A-frames for a family or a group, and sometimes a yurt in the yard — an inexpensive way to sleep in one without driving up to a summer pasture.

What is nearby

Along the shore in one direction are Kadzhi-Say and Skazka, the canyon of red rock formations; in the other, Ton and Tosor. In summer the mountain road to Song-Kul leaves from Bokonbaevo, so the village often serves as the night stop before or after the pass.

What to check before booking

How far it is to the water — many houses are in the village rather than on the shore. Whether there is hot water and heating outside the season. Whether the host arranges an eagle-hunting demonstration, horses or a ride up to Song-Kul — that is usually handled by the host directly. And how you will arrive: scheduled transport is sparse, most people drive or take a taxi from Balykchy.
