Issyk-Kul: which shore to choose, north or south

~ 8 min
0
18
The north shore is beaches, a promenade and a water park. The south is silence, Skazka Canyon and yurts. How they differ and what a night costs.

Choose your shore around the trip you want. For beaches, cafés and entertainment nearby, start with Cholpon-Ata and Bosteri on the north shore. For canyon outings, small guesthouses and nights in a yurt by the water, look at the south shore. You can swim on either side; the difference is what surrounds your accommodation. At the eastern end, allow a separate part of the trip for Karakol and the mountains.

The lake is worth seeing either way: open water, mountains on both shores and space for your eyes to wander. Issyk-Kul lies at 1,607 metres. You can come for a beach holiday or make the lakeside road part of a journey through villages and gorges.

If you came to Kyrgyzstan for mountains rather than for swimming, read the south shore section first — and give the lake two or three nights, not one.

Which shore fits your trip?

With children. Start with Cholpon-Ata and Bosteri if cafés and entertainment nearby matter. Check the particular property: walking distance to the beach, access to the water and evening noise. For quieter nights, look away from busy resort areas on either shore.

With friends or two families. Compare whole houses in Sary-Oy, Chok-Tal and Tamchy with southern options. Work out the price for the whole group and check beds, kitchen and outdoor space: room count does not tell you how many people can sleep comfortably.

For landscapes. Build a southern trip around Skazka Canyon, yurt camps and villages. Add Karakol if you plan to continue into the mountains. Decide whether you want one base or several overnight stops.

Without your own car. Stay close to what you came to see. Before booking, check the transfer from your arrival point and transport for outings. A village guesthouse and a lakeside yurt can call for different arrangements.

North shore: the beach and everything around it

This is the resort Issyk-Kul familiar to visitors from Bishkek, Almaty and Tashkent. In Cholpon-Ata and Bosteri a beach day can lead into an evening walk, dinner in a café and entertainment by the water. If quiet nights matter, ask how close your accommodation is to beach music.

Cholpon-Ata is the centre of the shore. Beyond the beaches there is an open-air petroglyph museum — a field of boulders carrying some two thousand carvings, the oldest more than two and a half thousand years old: ibex, hunters, animals that no longer live in these mountains. Come in the morning, when low sun picks out the lines; by midday the stone flattens and the images disappear. Nearby are the Rukh Ordo complex and the hippodrome where the 2026 World Nomad Games held their kok-boru finals.

Bosteri, east of Cholpon-Ata, has sanatoria, resorts, a water park and a funfair. It is one option for families looking for activities beyond swimming. Check which attractions are open on your travel dates.

West towards Balykchy the shore calms down — Sary-Oy, Chok-Tal, Tamchy. Same water, same beaches, but instead of a promenade you get large houses behind gates. People come here in groups to rent a house with a barbecue rather than a room.

South shore: canyons, villages and lakeside yurts

The south is a different trip. There are beaches, but the villages do not live on the summer season alone, there is far less infrastructure, and the mountains stand closer to the water: the Terskey Ala-Too rises almost straight off the road.

The reason to come is Skazka Canyon — "Fairy Tale" Canyon. Red and orange clay ridges, eroded into walls, towers and dragon spines, about twenty minutes by car from Bokonbaevo. At sunset the rock burns a colour nobody believes in photographs. Avoid the middle of the day: there is no shade at all on the ridges.

Bokonbaevo is the district centre and the largest village on this shore. Berkutchi — eagle hunters — keep their birds here and show hunting with them; the Salbuurun festival in August adds archery and traditional games; and in the neighbouring village of Kyzyl-Tuu craftsmen still build boz üy, the Kyrgyz yurt.

Kaji-Say has beaches, whole houses, guesthouses and holiday bases. Other southern places include Ton and Tosor; Barskoon is a stop for gorges and waterfalls.

The eastern tip: Karakol

At the east end of the lake a third Issyk-Kul begins — the mountain one. Karakol is 145 road kilometres from Cholpon-Ata, and nobody goes there for a beach: trails to Jeti-Oguz, Altyn-Arashan and Ala-Kul start from the town, and in winter the ski base runs. January averages around −6 °C here against −3 °C on the north shore.

If your trip falls in winter, we have a separate piece on it: Karakol in winter: what to come for and where to stay.

When to come

July and August are the main months for a beach holiday, with the warmest water at around 19.5–20.2 °C. Choose accommodation ahead of time for popular dates.

May, June and September are the calm middle: emptier, cheaper, and in September the water still holds its heat. If you are here for the canyon, the gorges and the villages rather than for swimming, these are the better months.

For a winter skiing trip, choose Karakol. If you want a lakeside stay outside summer, check that the property accepts guests and has heating and hot water.

Getting there

By car or taxi. Cholpon-Ata is about 265 road kilometres from Bishkek; allow roughly four hours without long stops. The route goes through the Boom Gorge and Balykchy. From there, the north shore leads towards Cholpon-Ata and Bosteri, the south towards Bokonbaevo and Kaji-Say. Plan the time to your actual property separately, allowing for stops and traffic. If you need a driver, agree the pickup and outings before you travel.

By train. Summer rail services may connect Bishkek with Balykchy. Check operating dates, times and fares with Kyrgyz Temir Jolu before travelling. Balykchy is a transfer point: you will need onward transport to Cholpon-Ata, Bosteri or the southern villages. Arrange this with your host in advance.

By air. Issyk-Kul International Airport (IKU) is near Tamchy on the north shore. Check direct flights for your dates with the airline and arrange the transfer to your property separately. Flying into Bishkek is another option, followed by a road journey to the lake.

Examples of nightly prices

These are examples from a small selection of property pages checked on 8 October 2026, in low season. They are not shore-wide averages. Check the rate and availability for your dates with the selected property; summer prices may differ.

Facilities differ: the 1,600-som room has a shared bathroom. Compare facilities, meals and beach access as well as price. The yurts are different products too: one sleeps a group, the other is for a single guest with meals. This selection does not establish that the whole south shore is cheaper.

Som is the local currency. For spending on arrival, check with your host whether cash, cards or another payment method are accepted, and plan cash withdrawals before travelling to smaller villages. This is separate from the Meiman booking deposit, described below. Check the language your host speaks and keep a translation app available if needed.

Where to stay

Choose the shore first. It decides both the price and what you will be doing with your days.

On Meiman you can choose a guesthouse, apartment, whole house or yurt. Browse options for your dates:

By place:

What to ask a host before booking, on either shore: how far it is to the water and whose beach it is; how many beds, not how many rooms; whether meals are included; parking and a barbecue spot. On the south shore outside July and August, heating and hot water.

How booking works

Pick a property on Meiman and send a request for your dates. The host confirms it — most properties are confirmed by hand, not instantly — and once confirmed you have two hours to pay the deposit by Visa card on the bank's secure page. Pay the rest to the host on arrival; check the accepted payment method before travelling.

The deposit is what holds the booking, not the confirmation: several guests can be waiting on the same dates. Details are in the payment guide.

For July and August, choose accommodation ahead of time. Check cancellation terms and the deposit deadline before sending a request.
