Other stays in Karakol
Read in the Journal
Karakol is the one town on the eastern shore where demand holds all year: trekking in summer, the ski base in winter, and work trips to the regional centre in between. There are not many hotels, and over the New Year holidays they are the first to go.
You take a hotel for the service: breakfast, housekeeping, a reception desk in the evening, an invoice for a work trip. There are three times as many guest houses in town and they cost less — but there you get a host instead of a receptionist, and the bathroom may be shared. If you come off the trail late and just want a key and a shower, a hotel is the more predictable option.
The ski base up the Karakol gorge is the region's main winter draw. Ask the hotel about transfers to the lifts and about drying gear: the base is around 20 minutes by car, and the marshrutkas do not always run at useful times. Heating is worth checking separately.
Trails to Ala-Kul, Altyn-Arashan and Jeti-Oguz start from town, and Karakol itself is worth a day for the Dungan mosque, the wooden Holy Trinity church and the Sunday animal market. If you need a kitchen and laundry after a trek, look at apartments.
You book directly, with no agency fees. Some hotels are confirmed straight away, others once the host has checked the dates. Meiman holds your prepayment until you check in and passes it on only afterwards; the rest you pay on arrival. You can pay by card or by QR.
