Other stays in Karakol
Read in the Journal
People rarely come to Karakol for a single night: in summer the trails to Ala-Kul and Altyn-Arashan start here, in winter the ski base is running, and the whole eastern end of the lake is easiest to explore from town. Over several days an apartment costs less than a hotel, and having a kitchen after a long day on the trail beats breakfast in a room.
Groups of two to four heading out on routes and coming back; families staying a week; skiers taking several days in a row; and work travellers — the town has few hotels and they fill up in season.
In winter, heating and hot water first: outages are not unheard of here, so ask directly. Then whether there is somewhere to dry gear and boots, whether parking is available, and how far it is to the marshrutkas for the gorges and to the market.
July to September and December to March are the peaks — apartments go early, especially over the New Year holidays. May and October are cheaper and quieter, but passes may be closed and the ski base may not be running yet.
For a group larger than four a whole house usually works out cheaper, and if you want breakfast and route advice, a guest house — there are more of them in Karakol than of any other type of stay.
You book directly with the host, with no agency fees. Some apartments are confirmed straight away, others once the host has checked the dates. Meiman holds your prepayment until you check in and passes it to the host only afterwards; the rest you pay on arrival. You can pay by card or by QR.
