Guest houses in Karakol

Guest houses in Karakol

Karakol is the trekking capital of Kyrgyzstan, and the guest house is the default way to stay here: rooms in the host's house, breakfast, and someone who knows whether the pass is open and what vehicle you need to reach the trailhead. More than half of all guest houses on the Issyk-Kul shore are in this one town.

What is nearby

Trails to Ala-Kul, Altyn-Arashan and Jeti-Oguz start from the town, and in winter the ski base up the Karakol gorge is running. In town itself there is the Dungan mosque built without nails, the wooden Holy Trinity church, and the Sunday animal market that people travel here for on its own.

Seasons

July to September is the trekking season — rooms go early, especially for weekends. December to March is skiing and the New Year holidays. May and October are noticeably cheaper, but passes may still be closed: ask the host before booking, they know the conditions better than the forecast.

What to check before booking

Whether there is space to store and dry gear; whether the host arranges a transfer to Altyn-Arashan (that road needs a 4x4); whether breakfast is included and can be packed for an early start; private or shared bathroom; and how the house is heated in winter.

Booking and payment

You book directly with the host, with no agency fees. Some houses are confirmed straight away, others once the host has checked the dates. Meiman holds your prepayment until you check in and passes it to the host only afterwards; the rest you pay on arrival. You can pay by card or by QR.
