Karakol is the fourth largest town in Kyrgyzstan and the main base for trekking and skiing in the country. It sits at the eastern end of Issyk-Kul, 400 km from Bishkek. The routes to Altyn-Arashan, Ala-Kol, Jeti-Oguz and the Karakol Gorge start here, and in winter the Karakol Ski Base — the largest resort in the country — is open. What to choose

Guest houses are the most common format in Karakol: usually family-run homes with breakfast and help arranging a guide or a transfer into the mountains. They suit trekkers, skiers and anyone staying two to four days. Hotels are for travellers who want standard service: a front desk, a restaurant, an early breakfast before heading out. Apartments and cottages work for groups and longer stays — your own kitchen and room for gear. Hostels are taken by solo travellers looking for company on the Ala-Kol route.

Where to stay

The town centre — close to the Dungan Mosque, the Holy Trinity Cathedral, cafes and gear shops, convenient without a car. Along the road to Jeti-Oguz and Altyn-Arashan — houses and lodges closer to the trailheads. Near the Karakol Ski Base — relevant from December to March, and it saves the morning transfer.

When to go

The main seasons are summer (June to September, trekking) and winter (December to March, skiing). In the shoulder seasons the town is quieter and cheaper, but some routes are closed by snow and most visitors go for the hot springs instead.

Payment and confirmation

Some properties confirm a booking right away, others are confirmed by the host after checking the dates, so book ahead for the ski season and August.
