A baza otdykha at the lake is a set of cabins on one fenced site with a barbecue area, often a banya and its own way down to the water. It sits between a sanatorium and a private house: less service than the former, cheaper and more private than either. Meiman lists 52 of them on the lake — half of all such sites in the country.

Where to look

The southern shore leads: Tong has 11, Tosor 7 and Kadzhi-Say 4 — cleaner water, quieter, cheaper. Karakol and its surroundings have 9, open all year and used as a base for the ski season in winter. The northern shore has fewer — Bosteri 5, Kara-Oy 4, Sary-Oy 2 — where houses and apartments dominate instead.

What it costs

The median rate is around 6,000 som a night, from 500 for a bed to 26,000 for a large cabin. That is noticeably cheaper than renting a whole house on the northern shore, which is why these sites are taken by large groups and for company trips.

What to check before booking

What exactly you are booking: a whole cabin or a bed in one. Whether there is a private beach and how far it is. Whether the barbecue, firewood, gazebo and banya are included or charged. How many cars can park. And whether the site is open on your dates — some close from October to May.

Booking and payment

You book directly with the host, with no agency fees. Some sites confirm a booking right away, others once the host has checked the dates. Meiman holds your prepayment until you check in and passes it to the host only afterwards; the rest you pay on arrival. You can pay by card or by QR. Book ahead for July and August.
